But almost 90 per cent of us prefer to do it differently.

Nearly half of pasty lovers — 47 per cent — hold them vertically, eating the crimped edge and main pasty together.

Another 14 per cent eat the crimped side first and save the rest for last.

Meanwhile, 25 per cent do it in other unconventional ways — including cutting it up with a knife and fork.

Only 14 per cent got it right, according to a poll of 2,000 UK adults by Ginsters.

The vast majority, 94 per cent, also did not know that swede, onions and potatoes go into making a proper Cornish pasty.

Half — 51 per cent — believe carrots are part of the traditional recipe when they are not.

Ginsters’ expert Graham Cornish said: “Back in the day, Cornish miners would hold the pasty by the crimp to eat it and then throw out the crimped bit when they had finished the main pasty.
