SENDAI -- The tourism association of a northeastern Japan town, which was devastated by the 2011 tsunami, is calling for people to sign up for regular deliveries of winter seafood from January to March.
Reservations for the "Minamisanriku regular delivery service" will be accepted until Jan. 25. Products will be sent directly from fishermen and fish processing companies in the Miyagi Prefecture town of Minamisanriku toward the end of each month.
For 8,900 yen (about $77), including shipping and tax, customers will receive three packages: half of a cod and soft cod roe in January, raw wakame seaweed and scallops in February, and raw shelled oysters in March. The price is said to be about 1,000 yen (about $8) cheaper than buying the items separately.
Due to the spread of the coronavirus, the Minamisanriku-cho Tourism Association has been unable to hold its "Fukko-ichi" seasonal seafood sales event, which had continued since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
The association commented that it hopes the delivery service will "strengthen ties with people who visited us before the pandemic," and stressed that it can deliver seasonal delicacies while they are still fresh.
People can sign up for the delivery service at the association's official online store Minaminaya e-marche at https://ec-minatabi.good-travel.info/products/detail/250 (in Japanese).
