Emergency services were called to reports of the teenager struggling in the River Trent near Swarkestone, Derbyshire, yesterday afternoon as temperatures rocketed to 30C. The search continued into the morning and a body was found at approximately 11.30am.

Formal identification is yet to take place but police believe the body to be that of the teenager, reports Derbyshire Live.

More than 10 deaths have been linked to drowning since Saturday as the heatwave gripped the UK.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: "The body believed to be that of a 15-year-old boy has been recovered from a stretch of the River Trent, near Swarkstone.

"Specialist teams from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire police and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service carried out extensive search and rescue efforts, but sadly the boy’s body was recovered from the water just after 11.30am.

"The boy’s family have been made aware and specially trained officers are liaising with them, but formal identification has not yet taken place.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this distressing time."

Four paramedics in ambulance cars, two crewed ambulances and the air ambulance initially assisted police with the search yesterday.

The River Trent meanders sharply around Swarkestone and continues east through the rural county and into Nottinghamshire.

The death comes after a 19-year-old student drowned in a canal in Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, after swimming with pals.
