A WOMAN suffered third-degree burns in a bizarre accident after dropping nail glue on a sock as she gave herself a home pedicure.

Molly Furlong-Gallagher knocked a tub of adhesive onto her foot as she painted her toenails last week.

The substance reacted with her cotton socks and began "smoking and sizzling".

Horrifyingly, the 25-year-old was badly injured, suffering nerve damage to her right foot.

Molly, who lives in Liverpool, initially attempted to take care of the burns at home, but was forced to rush to A&E after suffering excruciating pain.

Medics referred her to a burns unit - and specialist doctors then diagnosed her with full-thickness third-degree burns.

The glue had burned through to her nerve endings, and she currently has no sensation in the area at all.

Her foot then became infected, forcing Molly to spend a weekend in hospital on a drip.

Days later, surgeons removed skin from her thigh and grafted it into the burns on her right foot.

"I was doing my nails, as I have done for years, and I had to use nail glue to put the tips on before the acrylic," she said.

"I had taken the lid of the glue off and went to grab something and I knocked the glue onto my sock.

“It then started smoking and sizzling and I felt just the most agonising pain.

"I was in shock and tried to get the sock off but it was melted and stuck to my foot."

When she managed to pull the fabric away from her skin, Molly immediately realised how serious her injury was.

"It had burned through layers of my skin," she said.

“I learned after it happened that nail glue or a chemical in nail glue reacts with cotton, so it had reacted with my sock.

"I'm still almost in disbelief that this has happened.

"I've used nail glue for years and if this hadn't happened I still wouldn't be aware of its dangerous reaction with cotton."

She urged parents to keep the glue away from little ones - and said it should be used "somewhere safe".

When cyanoacrylate-based adhesives like nail glue come into contact with cotton, it causes an extreme exothermic reaction - meaning severe heat is produced.

Molly has now shared her experiences on TikTok, telling users: “Nail glue reacts with cotton! Why is this not widely known?”

Thousands of people have now replied - with one saying: "I’m glad you shared. This can stop someone experiencing the same.”
