PETALING JAYA: The "Balik Kampung" exodus saw five million vehicles on the roads throughout the duration of Ops Selamat 18.

       Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah, in a statement Friday (May 13), said that statistics showed a slight increase in accidents when compared to the last Hari Raya-focused Ops Selamat in 2019.

       "A total of 15,947 accidents were recorded, which is a 1% (111 cases) increase when compared to Ops Selamat 15 in 2019.

       "Fatal accidents saw a total of 160 cases, a 7% jump or an increase of 10 cases from Ops Selamat 15," he said.

       Police statistics also showed 166 deaths throughout the duration of Ops Selamat 18.

       He added that despite the large number of cars on the road, the police successfully managed the flow of traffic with assistance from other relevant authorities.

       The use of aerial surveillance from their air assets and drones also aided in preventing the worsening of traffic jams.

       "The cooperation from the public in filling up the Balik Kampung forms have also helped reduce the amount of house break-ins.

       "A drastic drop of 42.6% was recorded, with Ops Selamat 18 showing 313 cases.

       "Previously in Ops Selamat 15, 545 house break-in cases were recorded," he said.
