Selfish motorists continue to fill their petrol tanks, jerry cans and even water bottles to the limit, despite the Government urging drivers to behave normally. Chaotic scenes have continued for a fifth-day as long queues and tensions build outside packed petrol stations up and down the country.

       The fuel frenzy was sparked on Friday after industry bosses raised alarm bells over the shortage of HGV drivers and its potential impact on petrol and diesel supply chains.

       The sector and the Government have reiterated there is no shortage of fuel in the refineries and have urged motorists to calm down.

       The decision by many motorists not to follow the advice has sparked a furious reaction from a number of Express.co.uk readers, who let their feeling known in the comments section of a previous story.

       “I just wish people would stop the crazy antics, talk about shooting yourself in the foot.”

       Cas1919 added: “Pity these panic buyers don't realise the impact their actions are having on emergency and postal services which will all rise in cost due to petrol stations/fuel companies taking advantage of the situation by raising the cost of fuel.

       “Their dreadfully selfish attitude is affecting the whole country.”

       Meanwhile, Comtat added: “The same idiots who are panic buying are the same ones who will have rooms full of toilet rolls.”

       The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), which represents independent fuel retailers who account for 65 percent of all the 8,380 UK forecourts, said many sites had run dry, but the situation did appear to be slowly improving.

       BP, which operates 1,200 stations, has said 30 percent of its sites do not have any petrol or diesel.

       The Government on Sunday announced a plan to issue temporary visas for 5,000 foreign truck drivers.

       The Road Haulage industry has previously estimated there is a shortage of 100,000 HGV drivers in the UK.

       The Government has also increased the number of HGV tests available to prospective drivers and reduced the number of examinations required.

       Today Prime Minister Boris Johnson put hundreds of military personnel on standby to begin fuel deliveries.

       Transport Secretary Grant Shapps added there were some hints the situation was easing as reserves at some gas stations had been replenished.

       He said: “We're starting to see very tentative signs of stabilisation which won't yet be reflected in the queue.

       "The sooner we all return to our normal buying habits, the quicker this gets resolved - and I do appeal to the public to do that.

       “In particular, no more water bottles at petrol stations: its dangerous and not helpful."
