A tractor-trailer hauling 34,000 pounds of silicon rubber rolled over on Interstate 94 East at South Canalport Avenue early Monday and all lanes were shut down as emergency crews worked to get the vehicle and its trapped driver upright, officials said.
Authorities called the crash a minor injury crash, although specific injuries for the driver of the semi were not immediately known.
The semi overturned on the outbound Dan Ryan around 5:15 a.m. and the vehicle “was on its side blocking three lanes of traffic with one lane open,” according to an email from Sgt. Delia Garcia, a spokeswoman for Illinois State Police.
About an hour later crews dispatched to move the vehicle were able to get it upright, while all lanes were closed for the work, Garcia said.
The rubber and an “unknown (nonhazardous) fluid” stayed contained in the trailer even when the vehicle was overturned, Garcia said.
“The trailer is sealed and closed at this time,” she said.
At 7 a.m., the two left lanes were reopened and traffic again was flowing, according to state police.
