KEPALA BATAS: A drug trafficking syndicate was crippled with the arrest of four people including a couple.
The raids in Penang and Kedah on Thursday (Dec 9) and Friday (Dec 10) also saw the seizure of ganja worth RM267,500.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Radzi Ahmad said police nabbed four suspects including a husband and wife, aged between 25 and 35, in three separate raids.
"We arrested two men while they were riding a motorcycle in Sungai Dua, Butterworth, at around 8.40pm on Dec 9.
"Upon checking, five compressed packages containing drugs, believed to be ganja weighing about 5kg and worth RM12,500, were seized," he told a press conference on Friday (Dec 10).
ACP Mohd Radzi said in a follow-up operation on the same day, police raided a house in Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani, where a woman was detained at about 9.50pm.
He said four sacks containing 100 compressed packages of drugs, believed to be ganja weighing about 102kg and worth RM255,000, were seized in the premises.
"Following this, we raided another location on Dec 10 at about 12.45am in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas, Penang, and arrested the woman’s husband.
"Investigations showed the man is related to the earlier suspects. We believe the syndicate has been active since June this year," he said.
ACP Mohd Radzi said police also confiscated a car, a motorcycle and RM73,000 in cash.
He said the seized drugs could cater to 210,000 drug addicts and that it was meant for the local market.
"We are still investigating who is the mastermind," he said, adding that one of the suspects tested positive for drugs while two others have prior records in drug-related offences.
All the four suspects have been remanded to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act.
In another case, police detained a 37-year-old man and seized drugs, believed to be ganja weighing about 10.3kg and worth RM25,693, in Penaga, North Seberang Prai.
He said the suspect was arrested at about 3am on Dec 10.
"Urine tests showed the suspect was positive for drugs. He also has three priors," he said.
