PETALING JAYA: There could be a slight increase in Covid-19 cases after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

However, the Health director-general said it would most likely involve less serious cases under Category 1 and 2.

"Although we expect that there could be a slight surge in cases after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, infections will likely be in the early stages or in Category 1 and 2.

"It will be less unlikely to fall under the serious cases of Category 3, 4 or 5," he said at a media briefing session regarding the excess mortality during Covid-19 in Malaysia on Monday (April 25).

Malaysia's Covid-19 daily cases have seen a declining trend in the past week and hovering around the 5,000-mark.

"But this will actually depend on each individual.

"We need to take care of ourselves. We need to take care of our families and also the country from the spread of Covid-19.

"God-willing, we will be protected by Allah so that we can safely celebrate in our kampung," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He reminded Malaysians to continue and observe all the relevant standard operating procedures (SOP) despite the easing of some restrictions set by the government.

He added that Malaysia was on the right track on its measures to curb the spread Covid-19.

"With the easing of restrictions, we hope that it will not be misused.

"With the help of the high vaccination rate, we can finally open interstate travels and allow cross state journeys as if the situation seems to be back to normal," he added.

He also told those travelling back to their kampung for the celebration to undergo a self Covid-19 antigen test.

"We do not want to bring the virus back to our kampung.”

He also advised those who have yet to get their vaccination to take it immediately at the nearest clinics and healthcare centres.

"If there are any signs of serious symptoms, please go to the nearest hospital so you can get the best treatment," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He also took the opportunity to wish those celebrating a blessed Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
