Prime Minister's questions today can be briefly summed up thus:

Sir Keir Starmer: "You [Rishi Sunak] have racist friends!"

       SNP leader: "You're all racists!"

There were actual details but that sums up the most unedifying PMQs for many long months in a crowded field of unedifying PMQs.

READ MORE: Rishi Sunak skewers Keir Starmer for 'double standards' in PMQs clash

Keir Starmer went on the attack over a Tory donor's comments (Image: PARLIAMENT)

To be fair, Starmer did mention proposals to abolish National Insurance and its potential impact on NHS spending and pensions. But this was very much an afterthought.

Essentially, today's PMQs was the finger-pointing, name-calling exercise to end all finger-pointing, name-calling exercises.

It had actually had a warm-up act from the Labour MP Afzal Khan who ranted about Tory "Islamophobia".

But Starmer had an easy issue to reach for with the Tory donor Frank Hester and his abominable comments about Diane Abbott and "hating all black women" along with suggesting she should be shot.

Saying Hester had apologised really did not seem to be enough, especially when a former Tory MP Lee Anderson was sitting on the Oppositon benches for Reform UK because his lesser comments were deemed beyond the pale to allow him back into the party.

But, as Sunak was able to point out, this was a question of pots and kettles calling people black as he weighed in to how Starmer has in effect repeatedly greenlighted antisemitism in Labour.

The Tory MPs roared with genuine laughter when Starmer tried to claim his party had "changed".

Sunak did not point out but could have mentioned that Abbott herself is being investigated by Labour for racism over a letter where she suggested that Jews could not suffer racism. Somehow after 11 months, Labour have not made a decision on that issue and she remains suspended.

But the problem is that this exchange was not the "end" of finger-pointing or calling each other racist. It is just the beginning. The entire election campaign is going to be dominated by a grotesque identity politics culture war where each party tries to be more virtuous than the other while the evidence tells us otherwise.

Why are they choosing this path?

The answer is simple. Labour has no serious policies to run on after ditching their £28 billion a year green plan. The Tories have barely anything to run on either apart from a vague promise to scrap National Insurance.

The polls show us that the Conservative record in government is not one the voters are warming to.

No wonder less than half of voters have said they will definitely vote at the next election and almost a third are probably definitely not going to vote. If PMQs today is a flavour of the campaign to come then many more people will wonder what they even have to vote for.
