KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating after a woman took to Twitter to allege that a policeman had messaged her on WhatsApp.

The woman had gone to a police station prior to the incident to apply for a permit for interstate travel.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah (pic) said they were alerted to the incident after the woman posted her conversation with the policeman on Twitter on Tuesday (June 29).

"According to the posting, the woman claimed she went to the Setapak police station in order to apply for an interstate travel permit prior to being contacted.

"We initially attempted to contact the woman for further details but were unsuccessful," Supt Ashari said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said they have however managed to identify the policeman who allegedly contacted the woman.

"We will not protect any officer or personnel and will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone found guilty of misconduct.

"The City Police Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) is currently investigating the issue," he said, adding that the woman had lodged a report at the Gombak police station around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

He said she will be called to have her statement taken soon.

Twitter handle @malissaali questioned the motive of a policeman for allegedly striking up a conversation with her on WhatsApp.

Based on the screengrab of the conversation, the cop allegedly asked her what she worked as and identified himself as someone from the police station she had visited.

When she asked why the policeman contacted her and if it was regarding issues with her permit, the cop responded he was simply asking questions and continued to query if she was a Johorean.

"I went to the police station to ask for permission to go to the hospital and he got my number and WhatsApp me unnecessarily. What is the motive?" she posted.

The public are urged to contact the Wangsa Maju police headquarters at 03-9289 9222, or the City police hotline at 03-2115 9999 with any information.
