Rachel Reeves is trying to keep MPs on side while sticking to fiscal rules (Image: Getty)
Rachel Reeves is scrambling to fill an estimated £30billion hole in the public's finances following several U-turns. The government has backtracked on its welfare reforms and scrapping the winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners.
But the Chancellor has committed to sticking to her fiscal rules which means tax rises could be on the way in the Autumn Budget. Ministers “pushed ahead too fast” and “didn’t listen enough” on welfare reform, the Education Secretary has said.

King and Prime Minister lead nation remembering horror of July 7 bombings
The King has called on the nation to remember the “extraordinary courage and compassion” in the face of the horrors of the July 7 bombings, while the Prime Minister said the country will unite to remember the lives lost.
In a message to mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks, Charles said comfort can be taken from the “spirit of unity” in London and the country more broadly, which has allowed the nation to heal.
Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer said “those who tried to divide us failed” adding “we stood together then, and we stand together now”.
The Prime Minister and London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan laid wreaths at the July 7 memorial in Hyde Park at 8.50am on Monday, to coincide with the moment that the first bomb went off.
Officials including Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and Chief Constable of British Transport Police Lucy D’Orsi also laid floral tributes.
On July 7 2005, four suicide bombers struck the capital’s transport network, killing 52 people and injuring more than 770 on three London Underground trains and a bus.

Pupils can get help without special needs plans, says schools minister
It's a top political story today, but we reported last week that Ministers want to cut the number of pupils with Education, Health and Care plans, but say no child will lose support.
Schools minister Catherine McKinnell suggested children with special needs could have their needs met without an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, which entitles them to extra support such as personal tuition or speech therapy.
Ministers insist the current system is failing the 1.7million pupils with special needs and changes to be published in a White Paper will improve outcomes for youngsters. But Conservatives say the measures will “terrify” parents and warn the Government is on course to provoke another rebellion by angry Labour MPs.

Minister offers parents reassurances over cuts to special needs support
Parents should have “absolutely” no fear that support for children with special needs will be scaled back, a minister has said.
Stephen Morgan was asked about education, health and care plans (EHCP), after campaigners urged the Government to not cut them.
Asked by broadcaster LBC if the campaigners and charities should have no fear about the future of support for children with special educational needs or disabilities, education minister Stephen Morgan said: “Absolutely. What we want to do is make sure we’ve got a better system in place as a result of the reform that we’re doing that improves outcomes for children with additional needs.”
Asked if the reforms could including scrapping ECH plans, Mr Morgan replied: “We’re looking at all things in the round.
“I’m not going to get into the mechanics today, but this is about strengthening support for system.”

Job cuts coming, warns Confederation of British Industry
Financial firms are expecting job losses to accelerate in the coming months, with demand worries weighing on investment plans and optimism levels hitting a fresh low, a new survey shows.
But this isn't just about financial companies themselves. Part of the concern is that businesses such as manufacturers are expected to invest less, which means less work for finance businesses such as those that lend money.
Activity across the sector fell in the three months to June, at the fastest rate since December 2023, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).
It is the first time activity has decreased in more than a year.
Banks led the downturn with output dropping sharply over the latest quarter, and businesses bracing for a further slowdown over the coming months.
It comes amid efforts among squeezed UK businesses to reduce costs – with the firms surveyed saying they anticipate profitability to improve modestly amid the staffing cuts.
Meanwhile, financial firms are expecting the level of investment to reduce in the year ahead – notably spending on land, buildings and vehicles, plants and machinery.
