A 12-year old girl was shot and severely wounded Tuesday night in Southeast Washington, D.C. police said.
The girl was apparently in her home in the 3000 block of 30th Street SE when hit about 8:30 p.m., police said.

Investigators did not think the girl was the “intended target” of the gunshot, said LaShay Makal, head of the 7th police district.
The girl was breathing and semiconscious when taken to a hospital, police said. In a briefing late Tuesday, Makal said she was in stable condition.
Makal said police had stopped someone she called a person of interest. A firearm had been found, she said. She did not give additional details.
It was not clear where the shot that struck the girl was fired from, or why it was fired.
Makal described it as both appalling and devastating for a girl — or anyone — to be shot in a home, and emphasized the importance of getting guns off the streets.
“I am deeply outraged by the recent act of violence in our community,” Joseph Johnson, an advisory neighborhood commissioner who represents the area where the shooting occurred, said in an email. “It has reached a level that is out of control, and we, as residents, must say ‘enough is enough.’ "
