GEORGE TOWN: Six men were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Ops Mabuk at seven roadblocks mounted across the state on Wednesday (Nov 3), the eve of Deepavali.
State police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspects, aged from 24 to 48 years old, were detained at several locations in the state in the five-hour operation that ended at about 5am.
"A total of 1,072 individuals and 945 vehicles were inspected during the operation," he said in a statement posted on the state police's official Facebook page.
Comm Shuhaily said the suspects were detained under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said the statistics of arrests under Ops Mabuk increased after the inter-state travel ban was lifted on Oct 11 where a total of 47 individuals have been arrested compared to only 18 arrested from Sept 20 to Oct 10.
Comm Shuhaily said the operation, that was led by state Traffic and Public Order Department chief Supt Zafri Zolkapli, also saw 240 compound notices issued for various offenses.
During the operation, Comm Shuhaily was accompanied by his deputy, Deputy Comm Datuk Fisol Salleh,George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong and senior police officers from the state police contingent.
