TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 673 more coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on July 1.
The new cases came after Tokyo recorded 714 infections on June 30. The city is under quasi-emergency measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.
In the first week of June, Tokyo recorded an average of 422.9 new infections per day, before the figure declined to 380.4 in the second week, rose slightly to 391.9 in the third, and climbed again to 489 in the fourth. The figures were down from the daily average of 705.8 in May.
Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.
By June 30, a total of 2,234 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.
To date, Tokyo has recorded 174,607 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of June 30, there were 1,553 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 47 with severe symptoms.
