An apparently empty apartment in a South Shore high-rise building sustained damage from a fire Thursday morning, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to multiple reports of smoke about 11:30 a.m. on the ninth floor of the 13-story apartment in the 7100 block of South Cyril Avenue.
After wellness checks were made on neighbors, a child in “good condition” was transported out by the Fire Department as a “precautionary” measure, but ended up refusing treatment, said department spokesman Larry Langford.
The fire was contained to the apartment, which sustained “probably extensive” damage, Langford said, but there was also heavy smoke throughout the building.
The high-rise is over 100 years old with 48 units, according to the department. The building had functioning smoke alarms.
