SUBANG JAYA: A call centre that had allegedly developed illegal online gambling software has been shuttered after a police raid here.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, at a press conference on Thursday (March 21) at the district police headquarters here, said that 84 suspects were arrested following a raid at a unit in One City in Jalan USJ 25/1 on March 18.

Of the 84 suspects caught, one was found to be a foreigner.

"All 84 had computer science qualifications and were paid to work with this gambling syndicate. They were found to be the IT experts that had been tasked to build this (online gambling) platform and were paid between RM5,000 to RM20,000 per month.

"The syndicate's platform was found to have been intended for overseas markets such as Thailand, Brazil, China and Vietnam. This also means that this syndicate has ties with other criminal syndicates in those countries," he said, adding that the call centre had been in operation since last year.

Comm Hussein noted that normally the police would bust "Business to Customer" centres but this success was a rare "Business to Business" operation.

"A syndicate generally works in layers and we believe this is a 2nd layer of operations with another above it," he said.
