The staffer allegedly tested positive for Covid and is said to have been close to the Prime Minister on several occasions during his trip to Scotland. Although No10 has denied the staff member was a close contact, a source insisted they had been "side-by-side" on several occasions. With the staffer not being a close contact, Downing Street insisted Mr Johnson does not need to self-isolate.

The source claimed the staffer had flown on a "small aircraft" with the Prime Minister between Glasgow and Aberdeen.

It is unclear if Mr Johnson has now been tested following the apparent positive case in his team.

According to The Guardian, the staffer was told to self-isolate as were all those identified as close contacts.

It comes as Mr Johnson was forced to self-isolate after coming into contact with Sajid Javid, Health Secretary who had tested positive for Covid.

Chancellor, Rishi Sunak was also forced to do so, although both had initially claimed they would use the test and release scheme.

After public outcry, they reversed their decision and took up self-isolation with the Prime Minister doing so at Chequers.

Mr Johnson is fully vaccinated and contracted the virus last year.

Under current rules, those contacted by test and trace must self-isolate although it is not certain Mr Johnson has been informed to do so.

A statement from Downing Street said the Prime Minister would comply with all guidelines if required.

It also insisted the Prime Minister has not come into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid.

A No10 spokesperson told Express.co.uk said: "The Prime Minister regularly visits communities across the UK and all aspects of visits are carried out in line with covid guidance.

“The Prime Minister has not come into close contact with anyone who has tested positive.”

According to reports, the Prime Minister has not been contacted by NHS Test and Trace.

From August 16, self-isolation requirements for those who are fully vaccinated will change.

From then, those who come into close contact with someone who has contracted the virus and have been double-jabbed will not need to self-isolate.

Unvaccinated under-18s will also not need to self-isolate.

Instead, you will be encouraged to take a PCR test although Mr Javid has claimed this will not be a legal requirement.

A review of all restrictions and measures will be taken in September to assess the country's situation.

Released today, the UK reported 31,808 Covid cases taking the total to 185,592 over the last seven days.

A further 778 patients were admitted taking the total over the period ending over the last seven days to 5,498.
