The lorry crashed into the central barrier on the southside of the M6 earlier this morning, causing significant damage to the barriers. The crash took place between J7 Great Barr and J6 Spaghetti Junction. Motorists travelling southbound are facing significant delays of over 90 minutes this morning, with queues stretching over seven miles.
Congestion is stretching back to J10, Wolverhampton/Walsall.
Motorists travelling on the northbound carriageway are also facing delays of at least 20 minutes with four miles of traffic, accorinding to Highways England.
Traffic officers have closed two lanes of the southbound carriageway and one lane of on the northbound side.
As a result of the crash, oil was spilt on the road and it is currently being cleaned up, according to AA route planner.
They said: "Two lanes closed, long delays and queueing traffic for eight miles due to accident, a lorry involved and oil spillage on M6 Southbound between J7 A34 Birmingham Road (Great Barr) and J6 A38 Tyburn Road (Spaghetti Junction). Congestion to J10A (M54)."
Shocking pctures from the scene show the lorry across the central reservation, with the fenders partially torn off.
It is unclear how the accident occurred and if there were any injuries.
Highways England said recovery work is still ongoing.
They wrote on Twitter: "Recovery work is still ongoing on the #M6#J7#GreatBarr#A34 to #J6#SpaghettiJunction following the earlier collision."
