A former prison officer who was filmed having sex with an inmate at a London prison has been sentenced to 15 months in jail at Isleworth Crown Court.

       Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, was working at HMP Wandsworth when she entered the cell of a prisoner and had sex with him in June last year.

       The encounter, filmed by another inmate, later went viral on social media.

       De Sousa Abreu was identified by staff at the prison and arrested by the Metropolitan Police a few days at Heathrow Airport, where she had gone with the plan to fly to Madrid after calling the prison and saying she would not return to work.

       She pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office on July 29 last year. After admitting to misconduct in a public office in July, De Sousa Abreu, a Portuguese passport holder, received conditional bail.

       The video that captured the female prison officer engaging in illicit activities with the inmate went viral in June, after it was filmed by his cellmate, leading to a police investigation.

       The filmer boasts in the clip: "Guys we've made history, this is what I'm telling you."

       During sentencing, Judge Martin Edmunds KC said the former officer "knew that conduct was forbidden, and forbidden for good reason", and that the offence and harm caused "was immensely serious".

       He added: "You engaged in sexual activity with a prisoner. That compromised your role as an officer, and was misconduct which undermines discipline within the prison, and puts fellow officers at increased risk."

       Some officers at HMP Wandsworth claimed that, after the recording, they were "subject to abuse and harassment from prisoners" as well as being subjected to sexual approaches and being seen as "fair game", the judge said. Other officers claimed their children were teased at school over what their mothers may do at work.

       The court heard the prison officer had consented to sexual activity with the prisoner on the day of the incident, and had agreed to the second inmate being present and filming the encounter. However, the judge said she did not consent to the clip being published online.

       A Prison Service spokesperson said after sentencing: "While the overwhelming majority of Prison Service staff are hardworking and honest, we're catching more of the small minority who break the rules by bolstering our Counter Corruption Unit and strengthening our vetting processes."

       Tetteh Turkson from the Crown Prosecution Service condemned the episode as a severe violation of the public's trust, describing De Sousa Abreu's behaviour as eager and misguided.

       Turkson stressed that the CPS has zero tolerance for any prison staff acting in such an inappropriate manner and stands ready to prosecute those who exploit their authority.

       He said: "After working closely with the Metropolitan Police to build the strongest possible case, De Sousa had no option but accept she was guilty. She will now rightly face the consequences of her actions."
