More than £50million in taxpayers’ cash has been "wasted" on woke jobs since 2021, a new analysis has revealed.

And one Tory MP has branded the situation “ridiculous” - suggesting the large amount of cash spent on so-called Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) roles actually puts up barriers, rather than tearing them down.

The TPA figures suggest £52million has been spent by local authorities, with the figure rocketing up to £23million in 2022/23 compared to £12million in 2020/21.

The investigation comes after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt called on councils to ditch diversity schemes as part of plans to clamp down on wasteful spending which has seen several councils on the verge of bankruptcy.

The TPA investigation reveals that almost 200 councils in the UK have spent money on EDI roles since 2020.

For example, in 2022, cash-strapped Labour-run Birmingham City Council, which is committed to increasing council tax by 21 percent in the next two years, hired an "Assistant Director of Community Services and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion" with an average salary of £103,165.

Calderdale Council in West Yorkshire, another Labour authority, recruited a 'Staying Well Team Manager (Agency)' – one of 40 similar roles across 10 local authorities throughout a three-year period at a total cost of at least £1,149,441.

Joanna Marchong of the TPA said: 'With the cost of council tax soaring and the mounting debt councils are sitting on, taxpayers will be astonished by the money wasted on council non-jobs."

Tory MP Nick Fletcher told the Daily Mail: “Enough of this ridiculous woke spending that actually creates division.

“We absolutely must find a way to get rid of this wasteful and divisive resource allocation from right across our public sector.”

Former business secretary Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg added: 'It shows why councils do not deserve extra funding from central government. Too many are wasteful and badly run and will only be brought to order by tightening finances."

A Cabinet Office insider said: "The Government has been clear that councils cannot ask for more money while maintaining huge spending on non-jobs in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

“They need to get their house in order, tackle this unnecessary expenditure and focus on service delivery to their residents.”

In April, millions of Britons will see their council tax bills going up, with many authorities imposing a 4.99 per cent rise – the most it can be increased by without holding a referendum.

The Local Government Association, which represents 315 of the 317 councils in England, said: “Councils have a legal duty to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

“While councils continue to innovate and transform their services to meet the needs of their communities, it is unsustainable to expect them to keep doing more for less in the face of unprecedented cost and demand pressures.”
