A HUMAN skeleton has mysteriously been found at the bottom of a hospital lift that has not been used for more than two decades.

       Engineers were carrying out repair work on the lift - which has been broken for 24 years - at the OPEC Hospital in India when they made the gruesome discovery.

       The identity of the person found dead in the lift is unknown - but police have revealed the remains belong to a man.

       Authorities have sent DNA from the skeleton to a laboratory to be tested.

       Police are now searching through missing person reports from 24 years ago in the Uttar Pradesh area, according to local media outlet India Today, in a bid to identify the remains.

       Construction work on the hospital began back in 1991 and the lift was operational until it broke down in 1997, according to the cops.

       Since then, it has not been in use but hospital bosses decided that it was about time that it was repaired.

       But when workers opened the lift up on September 1 and had a look beneath it, they were shocked to discover human skeleton.

       It is unclear how the person died and why their corpse was in the lift in the first place.

       Police spokesperson Deependra Nath Choudhary said: "If any written complaint is given in the matter, we will register a case.

       "At present, the police are investigating several angles. To solve the mystery of the male skeleton, 24 police stations in the district have been deployed."

       The investigation is ongoing.
