From tomorrow, tourists will be able to wander around the gardens and explore the many picturesque picnic spots, eating with a view of the palace. With high demand for tickets, additional spots have been made available in July through to September.

Adam, 25, a visitor services warden for the Royal Collection, said of the garden opening: "It's an offer that we've never offered before.

"It's an exciting prospect to allow people to come in and picnic in the gardens and explore to their own leisure.

"We're sort of in an oasis within the centre of London so not many people realise it's here or how big it is either.

“It's the largest private garden in London, so I feel like we've got lots of secrets to tell people."

Along with opening the Palace gates, the Royal Collection Trust has launched a new range of summertime picnic themed products for picnic goers.

These include picnic blankets, sandwich bags, napkins and reusable water bottles.

Playing on the Queen's love of corgis, the sandwich bag features the cute dog.

The Royal Collection Trust also offers Buckingham Palace Gin made from lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, and bay and mulberry leaves grown in the Palace gardens.

The Queen receives a seasonal posy that is made from the garden's flowers every week when she is residing in Buckingham Palace, according to Adam.

"She definitely likes to be involved with everything that's going on," he said.

Sally Goodsir, the Royal Collection's curator of decorative arts, said that none of the state rooms have been able to open to the public due to the pandemic.

"We sadly haven't been able to open the state rooms this year because of the current situation as we might ordinarily have done and therefore it's wonderful to be able to open the garden instead," she said.

The Queen ordinarily hosts 8,000 guests in three annual Garden Parties at the Palace which have been cancelled this year.
