TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 17 coronavirus infections on Oct. 25, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced, the ninth day in a row under 50 cases and marking the lowest figure of 2021 for the second day in a row.

The capital reported 19 new cases the previous day.

In the first week of October, Tokyo averaged 154.3 new infections per day. The figure dropped to 77.1 in the second week, and 35.4 in the third. The capital recorded 31,842 total coronavirus cases in September, for an average of 1,061.4 cases per day, down sharply from the 125,606 total infections -- an average of 4,051.8 cases per day -- tallied in August.

By Oct. 24, 3,117 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in Japan in the spring of 2020.

Tokyo has recorded 377,435 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Oct. 24, there were 237 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 22 with severe symptoms.
