One of world's most populated countries with more people than Russia but 115 times smaller

The world’s population currently stands at around eight billion and there are some very populated countries out there.

One of them is a nation in Asia, which has more people than Russia but is 115 times smaller.

That country is Bangladesh, which is one of the most densely populated places on Earth.

While Russia is the largest country in the world, covering 17.1 million square kilometres, Bangladesh is just 148,460 square kilometres - making it about 115 times smaller.

Yet, Bangladesh has a larger population, with more than 170 million people, compared to Russia’s 144 million.

Located in South Asia, Bangladesh is bordered by India, Myanmar and the Bay of Bengal.

The country is dominated by the Ganges Delta, the largest river delta in the world, which makes much of its land fertile but also vulnerable to flooding.

More than 57 rivers flow through the country, earning it the nickname "Land of Rivers".

Despite its small size, Bangladesh is home to a huge and rapidly growing population.

In 2022, its population was recorded at 165 million, and by 2024, it surpassed 170 million.

The country is one of the most densely populated in the world, with around 1,265 people per square kilometre. In contrast, Russia has just nine people per square kilometre.

Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, is one of the fastest-growing megacities in the world.

It is divided into two city corporations, managing the northern and southern parts of the city.

Other major cities include Chittagong, Khulna, and Sylhet, but around 60% of the population still lives in rural areas.

Several factors have contributed to Bangladesh’s high population density. The country has historically had a high birth rate, though this has declined significantly in recent decades.

In 1985, the fertility rate was 5.5 children per woman, but by 2022, it had dropped to 1.9 - below the level needed for population replacement.

With such a large population in a small area, Bangladesh faces challenges in housing, infrastructure, and climate change.

About 10% of its land could be submerged if sea levels rise by just one metre, putting millions of people at risk of displacement.

However, Bangladesh has made significant progress in economic development. The country has a growing textile and manufacturing industry, making it one of the world's largest garment exporters.
