ISKANDAR PUTERI: The weekly Johor state executive councillors' meeting proceeded without the much-anticipated subject of snap polls being brought up, according to two exco members.

State Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Tosrin Jarvanthi said the meeting chaired by Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad at Bangunan Dato’ Jaafar Muhammad had gone smoothly.

The Bukit Permai assemblyman, who is from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), said that no exco members had raised the matter of snap state election with Hasni or whether there would be one in Johor.

“Nothing unusual happened at today's meeting, which went on like normal. We discussed government matters and nothing else.

“There was no discussion at all about the much-speculated snap polls,” he said when met after attending the meeting at Kota Iskandar here on Wednesday (Jan 19).

State women, family and community development committee chairman Zaiton Ismail, too, said no issues pertaining to snap polls were raised at the meeting, which lasted about six hours.

The Sungai Balang assemblyman from Umno added that all exco members gave their full cooperation to Hasni during the meeting.

“There were no problems raised during the meeting and every exco member just focused on their respective portfolios to make sure that the government runs smoothly,” she said.

The Johor government has 10 state executive councillors – five each from Barisan Nasional and Bersatu.

The Umno-led government in Johor has a simple majority, with 28 seats against Pakatan Harapan’s 27. One seat was left vacant after the passing of former mentri besar Datuk Osman Sapian, who was Kempas assemblyman, on Dec 21.

Currently, the state government consists of Umno (14), MIC (two), PAS (one) and Bersatu (11), while the Opposition comprises DAP (14), PKR (seven) and Amanah (six).
