Freezing temperatures and repeated snowfall has wreaked havoc all weekend, with Premier League matches affected, roads closed and now schools facing disruption as the new week starts. With more cold weather on the way and severe snow and ice already here, several schools have made the decision to close or move teaching online.

       Storm Arwen hit the UK this weekend, bringing fiercely cold weather, gale-force winds and heavy snow to much of the country.

       Met Office warnings spanned almost the entire UK, with a rare red warning issued for the North East for wind.

       Today a yellow weather warning for ice remains in place, impacting Central, Tayside and Fife, East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, South West England, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

       Last night was the coldest of the season so far according to Met Office forecasters, with temperatures plummeting to -8.7C in Shap, Cumbria.
