Everyone is saying the same thing after Rishi Sunak was soaked outside 10 Downing Street while announcing a general election for July 4.

Voters have reacted with hilarity after the prime minister was left dripping with water when making the announcement in the pouring rain, as Tony Blair anthem 'Things Can Only Get Better' by D:Ream' echoed around the street.

Twitter users said the scene "truly summed it all up".

One tweet read: "Rishi Sunak standing in the pouring rain bragging about himself whilst protestors blast 'Things Can Only Get Better' in the background truly sums it all up."

Another added: "Watching Rishi announce a general election as he gets drowned out by both music and rain is just cinema."

While a third said: "Rishi dishing out this speech in the pouring rain as 'Things Can Only Get Better' is played loudly. Is this an episode of The Thick of It."

Announcing the election this evening, Sunak said the election was “the moment for Britain to choose its future”.

said: “This election will take place at time when the world is more dangerous than it has been since the end of the Cold War.

The “uncertain times” call for a “clear plan”, he said.

The prime minister has gambled that improved inflation figures and a recovering economy will help him overturn Labour’s 20-point opinion poll lead.

A July election is earlier than many in Westminster had expected, with a contest in October or November widely thought to have been more likely.

Mr Sunak’s announcement came after the Office for National Statistics said Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation slowed to 2.3% in April, down from 3.2% in March.

He said that was a “major milestone” for the country, with inflation now “back to normal” levels.
