Inflation rises to 3.2% as food costs soar | The Independent

The UK inflation rate has reached 3.2 per cent, the greatest increase since records began over two decades ago in 1997.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), UK inflation rose from two per cent in July owing to higher food costs.

The current rate has exceeded the Bank of England’s two per cent inflation target set in June 2021.

The ONS has advised caution to be taken when assessing the August price increases, which it described as “temporary” only.

Other factors to consider include the cost of living increasing at less pace in July because of lower clothing and footwear prices.

Additionally, the Eat Out to Help Out scheme which took place in August last year made eating and drinking out considerably cheaper in comparison to August 2021. The scheme diners got a government supported 50 per cent discount on meals up to £10 each on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Earlier this month, wholesale firms warned of food price increases due to a lack staff including HGV drivers, fruit and vegetable pickers and meat processors.

The price of tomatoes for example, saw a considerable increase this year. A kilogram of tomatoes wholesale rose from 75p last year to £1.47 this year.

Darren Labbett, the managing director of Woods Foodservice, a wholesaler that supplies the pub and restaurant trade told BBC Radio 4 that wholesalers and other parts of the supply chain were unable to absorb rising costs.

“Vegetable oil is at its highest price now for over 30 years,” Mr Labbett said.

Following the announcement of the increase, the government has already began facing backlash online.

Labour MP, Jon Trickett claimed the rise would negate the Conservative’s increase of NHS pay.

As a result of the increase, the Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey will be forced to write to the chancellor to explain why prices have risen so quickly and what the central bank will do to bring it back within target.
