Rishi Sunak has declared he takes "responsibility" for the Conservatives' election drubbing, adding that the British people had delivered a "sobering verdict".
The Prime Minister, who won his Richmond and Northallerton seat, admitted it had been a "difficult" night for the party.

Mr Sunak said: “On this difficult night, I'd like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support.
“Since I moved here a decade ago. You have made me and my family feel so at home, and I look forward to continuing to serve as your Member of Parliament. It is an enormous privilege.
“I'm grateful to my agent and constituency team, and I congratulate my opponents here on the energetic and very good natured campaigns that they have run.
“The Labour Party has won this general election. And I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.
“Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides.
“That is something that should give us all confidence in our country's stability, and future.
“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on and I take responsibility for the loss.
“Too many good, hard working conservative candidates have lost despite their tireless efforts, their local records of delivery and their dedication to their communities.
“I will now head down to London where I will say more about tonight's results. Before I leave the job as prime minister, to which I have given my all. I will then return here to my family's home, and I look forward to spending more time with you all. In the weeks, months and years ahead.
“Thank you.”

Mr Sunak won 23,059 votes, trouncing Labour's Tom Wilson by more than 12,000 votes.
But the Conservatives were hammered in one of the party's worst General Election defeats.
Numerous Cabinet ministers lost their seats, including Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, and the threat of a civil war loomed large, as Tories began to blame each other for what went wrong.
Labour will today form a Government after winning by a landslide.
Mr Sunak and his wife were ushered into a room with a sign over the door reading "wellbeing suite" when they arrived at the count venue.
The couple stayed in the room for 35 minutes until the deputy returning officer asked candidates for the Richmond and Northallerton count to meet to discuss the provisional result in a private area of the venue.
As Mr Sunak and Ms Murty left the room, journalists shouted questions at him, asking if he would concede as he passed by.
It comes after a major poll predicted Mr Sunak would become the first sitting PM to lose their seat at an election.
The polling by Savanta for The Telegraph of around 18,000 people between June 7 and June 18 found the Tories would be down to just 53 seats, with the Prime Minister among the casualties.
Mr Sunak earlier this month insisted he was not taking winning his seat "for granted" at Thursday's ballot.

He told the Yorkshire Post: “I never take anything for granted, and I work as hard as I can for my constituents.
“I always say that’s my day job, and it’s a job that I absolutely love. And I think most of my constituents know that I have always worked really hard for them from the day I first got this job because I love doing it.”
Mr Sunak also previously insisted he would stay on as an MP for a full term if he wins, despite speculation he could leave politics for a move across the pond.
He said: “Gosh, I love being an MP. Yes, of course I’m staying.
“I love being an MP, I love my constituents, I love my home in North Yorkshire – it’s wonderful.
