KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resource Ministry, through the Social Security Organisation (Socso), is conducting a survey on social security protection for Malaysians working abroad.

The ministry, in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 11), said a preliminary survey, to be carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis (Ilmia), Department of Statistics Malaysia, would focus on Malaysians working in Singapore.

It said the survey aimed to build a profile ecosystem, gather information and identify the needs of Malaysians working in Singapore in an effort to build a more comprehensive social safety net.

"The target respondents for this questionnaire are individuals who meet the criteria, namely Malaysians who are in Singapore whether working, not working or for other purposes; Malaysians working in Singapore but currently in Malaysia; and Malaysians who worked in Singapore from 2020 to 2022," it said and called for the cooperation of individuals who met the above criteria to participate in the survey which was being conducted online.

An estimated 150,000 Malaysians who commuted daily to Singapore to work before the Covid-19 pandemic would be involved in the study.

Of that number, about 90,000 Malaysians were still living and working in Singapore in 2021.

The ministry said the participation of Malaysians with the stipulated criteria was important in ensuring the information gathered would be accurate and could be used in determining the framework and for further action.

The questionnaires for the survey could be accessed by visiting the link at https://myworkabroad.perkeso.gov.my/index.php from Jan 10 to Feb 28, 2022.
