KOTA KINABALU: A police sergeant was charged with soliciting RM2,000 in 2021 to close an eye on an individual's drug trafficking activities in Sabah's northern Kudat district.

Zakaria Mohd Jasni, 40, pleaded not guilty on Monday (Feb 5)to the charge under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 before Special Corruption Court judge Jason Juga.

Judge Juga granted RM10,000 with RM3,000 deposit bail to Zakaria.

Zakaria was attached to the police anti-narcotics department in Kudat at the time of the offence. He is currently posted to the east coast Semporna district police.

He was also ordered to report to the MACC office every two months and surrender his international passport.

According to the charge sheet, Zakaria was accused of attempting to solicit a bribe of RM2,000 to be deposited in another person's account at a seafood company in Kudat on June 18, 2021.

The money was allegedly an inducement for him not to take action against a drug distribution carried out by an individual in the Kudat district.
