Knock it off! Families threatened with £42 daily fine for changing front door colour

The homeowners on the estate in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester, have learnt that they cannot change the colours of their doors to their own choice and face what could become a fine if they do not oblige, reported the Manchester Evening News.

Six households have been given two weeks to conform and repaint their houses to the original colour scheme or face the daily £42 fine that could add up to more than an astronomical £15,000 over a year.

Houses on the estate have been painted different colours including one which is sky blue and other homes have different styles of doors fitted which are also not allowed.

A resident, Frank Borson, said he is not backing down after changing his front door from the original white to a dark green.

He said he received an email from the property management company that looks after the estate two weeks ago saying that he had breached the terms of contract with them as it would constitute “causing a nuisance”.

The email reads: "The colours of front doors across site should remain as originally installed (white) to keep uniformity across the development.

"The green door would constitute a breach of the TP1 Transfer Document as this would be considered to be causing a nuisance."

Mr Borson was given a deadline of November 17 to carry out the work or face a £42 per day 'administration charge'.

He added: "To say the colour of someone's door is causing a nuisance is ridiculous.

"If it was in the rules then that's okay, but it's not.

"There's no way I am going to change it. Nobody is going to change it."

Express has contacted property company Manchester Residential Management Ltd for a comment.
