Pick someone who can walk the talk, says Chua

SEGAMAT: Voters in seats seeing multi-cornered fights are spoilt for choice but they should learn from experience and pick someone who can “walk the talk”, says former MCA president Tan Sri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He said the people should cast their vote rationally to make sure the best man wins.

“They have the right to choose but they are also responsible for evaluating each party and its candidate before voting.

“This should be done in terms of the candidate’s work, performance and capabilities. They must not be too emotional when voting,” he said after meeting with representatives of non-governmental organisations at the Chaah MCA branch in Chaah yesterday.

Dr Chua, who is a former Labis MP, was on the ground to campaign for MCA’s Bekok candidate Tan Chong, who is the Labis MCA division deputy chief.

Also present was Labis MCA division chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.

Dr Chua said Tan’s spirit of “never quitting” in Bekok despite losing twice in the previous elections made him a valuable local leader.

“Tan Chong needs no introduction for the locals in Bekok because everyone knows him. He has been around for decades.

“Despite losing twice, he continued to serve the people – something very different – in contrast to those who were elected but did little for the people,” he said, referring to DAP which won in Bekok in the 2013 and 2018 general elections.

“Let’s vote for a stable government and put Tan Chong up there. If he doesn’t do his work, you can call and tell me. I will come down and ‘fix’ him,” quipped Dr Chua.

Tee Yong also called for support for Tan, who knows the place well and has been around serving the community.

“We can achieve a breakthrough by having a local here – one who lives here and is ready to serve.

“He may be a straightforward person but he also has the heart for the people throughout the years,” he said.

Tan said he was seeking a mandate from the people for the third time in Bekok and planned to set up a mobile service centre if he wins the seat.

This would make it easier for the people, especially those living in rural areas, to voice their concerns, he said.
