With the rising prices of everything, consumers cut down on Raya expenses

JOHOR BARU: The rising cost of living has led to prudent spending with many people cutting down on expenses this Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Carpenter Hassri Abdul Kadir, 57, said he would buy fewer biscuits.

“One jar of biscuits has gone up by at least RM3 this year. To me, this is a lot.

“I will still buy some because I see it as a must-have for Hari Raya and I want my family to have a wholesome celebration.

“But instead of getting over a dozen varieties like I usually do, I plan to buy only four to five types this year,” he added.

On his Raya clothing, Hassri said he would look for cheaper options.

“I don’t think the quality matters because most likely, I will only wear it once or twice during the festival anyway,” he said.

Echoing a similar sentiment was Juriah Abdullah, 52.

“I will probably be baking biscuits instead of buying. Apart from saving money, it is also a good way to spend time with my family. But I think I will still buy a few jars later,” said the mother of four.

Juriah, who is a home decor enthusiast, said she would also be keeping festive decorations simple.

“I love decorating my house for various occasions and I have participated in many home decoration competitions in the past.

“This year is a little different, I am moving to a new home in less than a month but I still want to have a Raya ambiance so I will keep the decoration simple,” she said.

Mechanic Ikhwan Md Nor, 28, said he would not be buying new clothes.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has taught me what is important in life. I learned that the most important thing is that we are still able to see our loved ones this Hari Raya.

“The rest, including new clothes, are unnecessary. With the rising prices of everything, including house rent and food, we should be more mindful of our spending,” he said.
