Bus lanes branded ‘money-spinners’ for councils as they rake in gigantic amount of fines

AA analysis found that £127.3million of fines to motorists was paid in England during 2022/23.

With £47.7million going towards costs, this resulted in £79.6million surplus. Transport for London generated the most with £48.5million.

Bus lane rules vary, with some operating at peak times, or open to other vehicles such as taxis and motorbikes.

Many are enforced by cameras, leading to fines for improper use.

Luke Bosdet, of the AA, said: “Bus lanes are a huge money-spinner.

“It suggests signage and road markings often don’t do their job in directing drivers away from bus lanes.

“It’s hard to believe that so many motorists throw themselves into bus lanes for the joy of losing a day’s wages.” The Local Government Association was asked to comment.
