WASHINGTON — The Biden administration nominated its first set of U.S. Marshals, which included Oak Park police Chief LaDon Reynolds to serve as U.S. Marshal in the Northern District of Illinois, which includes Chicago.

       The set of nominations also included the first Black man to serve as the U.S. Marshal in Minnesota and the first Black women to serve as U.S. attorneys in the Northern District of Ohio and the Eastern District of Michigan. And it will nominate the first Black men to serve as U.S. attorneys in Nevada and in the Middle District of Louisiana.

       The Justice Department’s 93 U.S. attorneys, who are responsible for federal criminal prosecutions in their respective districts, are likely to be central to efforts to combat violent crime.

       Reynolds, who could not be immediately reached for comment, is a longtime officer also serves as the department’s emergency preparedness coordinator. Oak Park village spokesman David Powers said that Reynolds was recommended for the position by Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL).

       Reynolds joined the Oak Park police force as a patrol officer in 1994, and he was sworn in as the village’s 13th police chief in Jan. 2019. Before becoming chief, Reynolds also served as a detective, sergeant and commander before becoming deputy chief in 2017.

       In April of this year, Reynolds was also named to a new state 21-member commission assembled by Gov. J.B. Pritzker that focuses on studying discrimination and hate crimes. The commission will also provide a yearly report to Illinois officials on its findings. Reynolds term will expire on March 1, 2023.

       The candidates were “chosen for their devotion to enforcing the law, their professionalism, their experience and credentials in this field, their dedication to pursuing equal justice for all, and their commitment to the independence of the Department of Justice,” the White House said.
