Lady Louise born premature causing 'quite profound' eye condition – 'Took time to correct'

Lady Louise, 17, who is said to be the Queen’s favourite grandchild, has inspired Sophie Wessex, 56, to embrace vision charities. She was born on November 8, 2003 a month before she was due when the Countess of Wessex was rushed to hospital.

Due to the premature nature of her birth, Prince Edward, 57, was in Mauritius at the time and could not be by his wife’s side.

Complications related to Lady Louise’s birth caused her to have esotropia - an eye condition that turns the eye outwards.

As a baby, Lady Louise had her first operation at just 18 months, but it was unsuccessful.

But surgery carried out in 2014 successfully corrected the issue.

Lady Louise’s journey inspired Sophie to work with vision charities and become an ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

The Countess previously spoke out about her daughter’s condition in an interview with the Sunday Express.

She said: "Premature babies can often have squints because the eyes are the last thing in the baby package to really be finalised.

”Her squint was quite profound when she was tiny and it takes time to correct it.

“You've got to make sure one eye doesn't become more dominant than the other but she's fine now—her eyesight is perfect.”
