Standing up for Ukraine

PETALING JAYA: The Russian invasion of Ukraine has created shockwaves and “Ukraine” is leading the Malaysian Twitter trending chart with over 2.27 million tweets, followed by “Putin” and “Nato”.

Most social media users have been posting their concerns and support for the Ukrainians following Russia’s attack on the eastern European country.

A user going by the handle @aemanjauhary_ believed the war would impact Asean’s economy.

“The cost of goods might increase, as well as gas and oil,” he wrote yesterday.

In 2020, Ukraine was the biggest supplier of grain crops and sunflower oil to Malaysia, where 47% of sunflower oil in the domestic market was of Ukrainian origin.

One user touched on the life of the Ukrainian people who might have to leave their homeland due to the war.

“I can’t imagine how they feel,” she said.

Another Twitter user Adam Kee said Malaysia needs to stand with Ukraine against foreign invasion.

“Some people might say Malaysia should not pick sides. But please remember we were victims of foreign invasions.

“We know how it feels to have a government formed by some power-hungry foreigners. Stand with #Ukraine, say no to foreign invasions of sovereign states!” he tweeted.

Some users also stood in solidarity for the country, remembering Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 that was shot down by rebels at the pro-Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine.

“We should not forget the MH17 incident where it was brought down by the rebels back in 2014. As Malaysians, we need to stand with Ukraine and bring the perpetrators to justice,” one user said.
