D.C. police shut down portions of the Southeast-Southwest freeway and nearby streets Thursday night during an hours-long standoff with a person inside a Southwest Washington apartment building, officials said.

Authorities responded for the report of a person in distress in the 600 block of Fourth Street SW just after 4 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. It was not immediately clear why the person stayed inside the residence and there were no confirmed reports of anyone else inside, Carew said.
No injuries were immediately reported.
Police closed down ramps onto northbound Interstate 395 at Maine Avenue, the Ninth Street tunnel and traffic from the 14th Street bridge. Authorities also shut down streets in Southwest, including Ninth Street at Independence Avenue and Seventh Street at G Street.
