Multiple Kane County police agencies are searching for an inmate who escaped from a vehicle while he was being transported to the county jail.
The inmate was being transferred from the Elgin Police Department to the Kane County Sheriff’s jail when he slipped his handcuffs and escaped from the vehicle near Randall Road and Route 64 around 1:05 p.m., Sheriff Ron Hain said.
While the officer was stopped in traffic, the inmate fled the police transport van, St. Charles city officials said in a news release.
St. Charles, Elgin and Kane County Sheriff’s officers are searching for Hugo R. Avila, 21, who was remanded in custody after a bond call hearing Tuesday morning for felony traffic charges.
Avila was charged Monday with aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, speeding 21 miles per hour over the speed limit, not having a valid driver’s license and possessing drug paraphernalia, Kane County court records show.

Police are searching several nearby businesses along the corridor between Route 64 and Dean Street, Hain said.
Avila is described as having black hair and brown eyes, approximately 5′8″, 125 pounds and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.
If anyone sees Avila, police ask them to call 911 and do not make contact with him.
