BREXITEERS and Remainers are sharply divided on who is the best person to succeed Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservatives.
Exclusive Ipsos polling found that Tom Tugendhat is the most admired candidate among people who voted Remain in the historic 2016 referendum.
Twenty-one per cent of those who voted to stay in the EU thought the ex-security minister would do a very or fairly good job as leader, with 18 per cent of them saying the same for former Home Secretary James Cleverly and 11 per cent for ex-Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch.
But among those who voted to leave the EU, a quarter thought ex-Home Secretary Dame Priti Patel would be a very or fairly good leader. A fifth of those who backed Brexit said this about former immigration minister Robert Jenrick and 18 per cent about Mr Cleverly.
Remain voters were most opposed to Dame Priti taking the reins, with 62 per cent saying she would be a very or fairly bad leader.

The research suggests that Brexit divisions at the heart of the Tory tribe could define the leadership contest. The polling also highlights the challenges the next leader will face when he or she tries to win back people who voted Liberal Democrat or Reform UK last month.
More Reform voters said Dame Priti would do a good job (32 per cent) than any other candidate, ahead of Ms Badenoch (18 per cent) and Mr Jenrick (17 per cent) – with just nine per cent of them saying this of Mr Tugendhat.
But among Lib Dem voters, Mr Tugendhat was the most popular with 24 per cent saying he could be a very or fairly good leader. Fifty-seven per cent of Lib Dem supporters thought Dame Priti would do a bad job.
Only Tory members will get a vote on the final two candidates who make it through to the last round of the leadership contest.

Mr Cleverly will be encouraged that when it comes to whom Conservative voters think will do a good job as leader, he is in front place with 31 per cent, ahead of Dame Priti (30 per cent), Mr Tugendhat and Mr Jenrick (both 27 per cent), Ms Badenoch (25 per cent) and former Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride (10 per cent).
A spokesman for Mr Cleverly’s campaign said: “James is the right person to unite the party around our Conservative values and oppose Starmer’s statism. He has the experience to win the next election and deliver for the British people again.”
When the views of all respondents were taken into account, Mr Cleverly once again had the most people saying he would do a good job (18 per cent), ahead of Dame Priti and Mr Tugendhat (both 17 per cent) and Ms Badenoch and Mr Jenrick (both 14 per cent) and Mr Stride (nine per cent).
Forty-four per cent of all those polled said Dame Priti would do a bad job, more than Ms Badenoch (22 per cent), Mr Cleverly (20 per cent), Mr Jenrick (15 per cent), Mr Tugendhat (11 per cent) and Mr Stride (nine per cent).
Mr Tugendhat was the only candidate to have a net positive rating (+6) among all respondents.
A Conservative source said: “Rebuilding trust in our ability to deliver will be a crucial first step to putting the party back on a winning footing. It’s clear which of the candidates stands out as being able to do so.”
One of the biggest challenges facing whoever wins will be getting the electorate excited about the Conservatives. Sixty-two per cent said they did not care very much or at all who is the next leader.
Ipsos’s Trinh Tu said the polling suggested a “high level of public apathy”.
Interventions by big beasts of the Tory party in support of candidates could backfire. Sixty-five per cent said an endorsement from former PM Liz Truss would give the candidate a “worse chance of winning”.
