The driver of a stolen vehicle was fatally struck by a semitruck during a brief police foot chase in the Austin neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.
Around 2:30 p.m., officers assigned to the CPD’s vehicular hijacking task force spotted a stolen vehicle parked at an auto cleaning service in the 800 block of South Cicero Avenue. Officers approached the 24-year-old driver as he got out of the vehicle, but he ran into the street and was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to a statement from CPD.

The semitruck, according to police sources, did not stop and left the scene.
The man, whose identity was withheld, was pronounced dead at 2:55 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The police major accident investigation unit is probing the crash while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it was also investigating the incident.
