TOKYO -- The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is warning of turbulent waves in some parts of the Okinawa region on Sept. 28 and possibly in the Amami region and the Ogasawara Islands the following day due to the effects of Typhoon Mindulle, the 16th typhoon of this year.
The agency is calling for people to be on their guard against high waves and stormy winds. The powerful typhoon is also expected to bring turbulent waves to the Pacific side of western to northern Japan up to around Oct. 1, and could cause stormy weather mainly across the Izu Island chain south of Tokyo.
As of 3 a.m. on Sept. 27, Typhoon Mindulle was located in the waters near Okinotorishima Island, part of the Ogasawara Islands far south of Tokyo, and was slowly moving northward. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 920 hectopascals and was packing winds near its center of up to 55 meters per second (198 kilometers per hour) with gusts of up to 75 m/s (270 kph). Violent winds of at least 25 m/s (90 kph) are lashing areas within a 150-kilometer radius of the typhoon's core.
The typhoon is projected to move north-northwestward along the south of Japan through Sept. 29. It is then expected to gradually change its path from northward to northeastward, shifting from the south of Japan to the east of the archipelago. Mindulle is feared to develop into an extremely powerful typhoon and approach very close to the Izu Islands around Oct. 1.
As the typhoon moves northward, high waves will be observed mainly in the region of Okinawa's Daito Islands, and some areas will see turbulent waves on Sept. 28. The Amami region and the Ogasawara Islands are also forecast to experience turbulent waves the following day.
The Okinawa region is estimated to observe waves of 6 meters high on Sept. 28, and the following day will see waves between 6 and 8 meters high in the Okinawa and Amami regions as well as the Ogasawara Islands.
From Sept. 30 through around Oct. 1, turbulent waves will be observed along the Pacific side of western to eastern Japan. Northern Japan will also see turbulent waves around Oct. 1, with swells reaching as high as to require a warning. Strong waves could also be spotted mainly around the Izu Island chain.
As the typhoon moves northward, the Pacific side of eastern Japan will possibly experience strong winds from Sept. 30. Violent winds are expected to lash the Izu Islands around Oct. 1 due to the approaching typhoon. Depending on the typhoon's path, the Pacific side of eastern Japan could also suffer stormy winds.
