PETALING JAYA: It is a known fact that stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide.
In Malaysia, following an increase in recorded cases, with reference from Malaysia Health Data, stroke has become the top three causes of death and topped the nation’s disability rate.
Stroke is a debilitating disease that can happen to anyone anytime and anywhere.
Those with high-risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol or an unhealthy lifestyle are more vulnerable to stroke.
According to Malaysia Stroke Registry, on average, one in four people will experience a stroke and 40% of stroke patients are below 60 years old.
So how do you spot the symptoms of stroke? Remember B.E.F.A.S.T which stands for Balance difficulties, Eyesight changes, Face weakness, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time to call 999.
While this well-constructed acronym helps with the early detection of signs and symptoms of stroke, many are unclear when it comes to separating the facts from the myths when it comes to stroke.
Through Star Health & Nutrition On Web, two guest speakers – Dr Tan Wee Yong and Dr Siva Seeta – will be sharing critical facts on stroke.
Most importantly, both consultant neurologists will also be answering common questions and uncovering stroke myths during the session.
Prevention of stroke is beyond merely knowing and understanding the facts and myths of stroke.
After identifying the symptoms of stroke, seeking immediate attention and getting the right treatment is crucial.
Thanks to the collaboration between Malaysia Stroke Council and Angels Initiative on the MYStroke Hospital Web Locator, the public can now locate their nearest stroke-ready hospital at https://mystrokehospital.my.
