JOHOR BARU: Ten youths, including a girl, were arrested for performing dangerous motorcycle stunts at several major roads here in the wee hours of the night.

       Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the youths, aged 15 to 20 years old, were picked up during an operation conducted at the Eastern Dispersal Link, North-South Expressway, Jalan Stulang Laut, Jalan Lingkaran Dalam and Jalan Skudai Pantai Lido.

       “The locations were identified as mat rempit hotspots where youths usually perform stunts such as wheelie, superman, zig-zag and other actions on their motorcycles.

       “This not only poses danger to other road users, but they are also putting themselves in harm's way,” he said in a statement.

       ACP Raub said the operation, from 11pm on Friday (March 18) until 4am Saturday (March 19), was to combat mat rempit activities other than weeding out other traffic offences.

       The 10 arrested youths would be investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000 and a mandatory jail term of one day to five years.

       “During the operations, we also arrested eight other motorists who do not have a driver’s licence and issued 16 fines for 25 offences including having fancy car registration plates, modified exhaust pipes and vehicle structure that does not comply with the authorities’ specifications.

       “Our traffic investigation and enforcement unit will continue with operations especially on the weekends to curb such unruly activities to bring down the accident rate and safeguard road users’ safety,” he added.
