BRIT holidaymakers have been warned about sweltering temperatures with highs of up to 43C.

       Spain's state weather service issued a "special notice" for rising heat, asking tourists to avoid booze and sunbathing.

       Much of the mainland, the Balearic islands and the Canaries are under orange and yellow heat alerts over the weekend.

       Temperatures are forecast to potentially hit highs of 43C in Vega del Segura, near Alicante, as well as Sevilla, Cádiz and Córdoba.

       Spain's version of the Met Office - called AEMET - issued the special notice at 12pm local time.

       Health officials in Spain have warned locals and tourists to protect themselves from heat in the Iberian country.

       Tourists were asked to drink water frequently and avoid drinks with high levels of caffeine, sugar an alcohol as they can promote dehydration.

       Spanish authorities are also urging people to stay away from the sun and remain indoors in cool and shaded places for as long as possible

       "Try to reduce physical activity and avoid outdoor sports in the central hours of the day," the warning read.

       "Wear light , baggy clothing that allows you to perspire."

       This is the second extreme heat warning in Spain in less than a week.

       Last Saturday, Brit holidaymakers were warned they could face soaring temperatures of up to 42C.

       AEMET said the conditions would become a "heatwave".

       "In the coming days there will be a progressive rise in temperatures in much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands," said the agency.

       "[This is] due to the strong insolation on a warm and stable air mass, giving rise to an episode of heat wave from Sunday that will affect the northeast quadrant peninsular and the basins of the great rivers.

       "This situation will probably last until the Wednesday, [August] 23."

       It comes after many parts of Europe have faced a hot summer - with blazing heat in holiday destinations such as Spain and Greece.

       Weather experts have declared 2023 an El Ni？o year - a natural phenomenon that occurs cyclically and causes fluctuations in the global climate.
