David Cameron takes swipe at Boris Johnson
David Cameron used the first visit by a Foreign Secretary to the Falkland Islands in 30 years to poke fun at his own Brexit referendum failure.
Lord Cameron, who infamously quit No. 10 after losing the 2016 EU referendum that he called, compared his own success with that of the Falkland Islands.
Addressing a community reception to honour the ten years since the Falklands held their own plebiscite, Lord Cameron joked: "I think your referendum went rather better than one of mine."
In March 2013, islanders were asked whether they wished to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the UK.
A whopping 99.8% voted yes, with just 3 residents opposing the proposition.

The result stands in stark contrast to Lord Cameron’s own referendum record.
Lord Cameron has used his Falklands visit to downplay suggestions from the new Argentinian President Javier Milei that there may be negotiations over the islands' sovereignty in the future.
He pledged that Britain would support the islanders for “as long as they want”, adding: “I hope that’s for a very, very long time - possibly forever.”
The Foreign Secretary set out: “As far as we are concerned, as long as the Falkland Islands want to be part of the UK family they are absolutely welcome to be part of that family and we will support them and back them and help protect and defend them absolutely, as far as I’m concerned, for as long as they want.”
Lord Cameron met with President Milei at Davos in January, a meeting that was described as “warm and cordial” despite the ongoing diplomatic tensions over the islands’ sovereignty.

The Foreign Office stated Britain and Argentina would “agree to disagree, and do so politely”.
In a ceremony at Stanley, the Falklands capital, Lord Cameron laid a wreath at the Liberation Memorial, in “solemn remembrance of those who died defending the rights of all on these islands to determine their future”.
In a diplomatic move, he also paid tribute to the Argentine war dead, visiting an Argentine military cemetery.

Lord Cameron is the first Cabinet member to visit the Overseas Territory since 2016, and the first Foreign Secretary since Lord Hurd in 1994.
The trip had initially been planned by Lord Cameron’s predecessor James Cleverly, before he was moved to the Foreign Office.
Mr Cleverly warned that Labour would be a threat to the islands’ sovereignty.
