Queen Elizabeth II, 95, is the longest-reigning monarch in British history and will be the first-ever sovereign in the UK to celebrate 70 years on the throne. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee will be commemorated next spring with an extra bank holiday and nationwide celebrations.

On Tuesday, Buckingham Palace revealed the image that has been selected to embody next year's milestone event.

The Royal Family's official Twitter account shared the winning design with the public on Tuesday.

The tweet with the image that features a simple crown read: "The official emblem of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Emblem Competition has been revealed, following a national competition run by @V_and_A and Buckingham Palace…"

In a follow-up tweet, the Firm congratulated competition winner Edward Roberts on his design.

The tweet read: "The winning entry was designed by 19-year-old Edward Roberts, a graphic design student from Nottinghamshire.

"Edward’s design was selected by a panel of expert judges and will feature throughout the Jubilee celebrations, from official merchandise to street party cupcakes!"

Another Palace tweet explaining the design read: "The emblem has been inspired by The Queen’s historic reign.

"The purple nods to the Robe of Estate, worn by The Queen at the Coronation."

The tweet added: "A continuous platinum line symbolises The Queen’s 70 years as Monarch

"The font reflects the Order of Service of the Coronation."

Royal commentator and art expert Richard Fitzwilliams lavished praise on the "contemporary" emblem, claiming it succeeds where previous designs have failed.

He told Express.co.uk: "This is simple and imaginative."

The commentator added: "The line which depicts St Edward’s Crown is symbolic of both the longevity of the Queen’s reign and one could also say of the monarchy which has lasted over 1,000 years.

"It has a lively contemporary feel too.

"The emblem’s for the Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilee were highly effective but firmly traditional.

"That for the Diamond Jubilee, chosen from a competition open to young children, seemed rather inadequate given what was being celebrated."

He concluded: "This is ideal. We look forward to celebrating."

Royal fans also gushed over the emblem on Twitter.

One commented: "Ah I love it... It's beautiful!! Well done Edward."

Another put: "Wow, I love this design so much! A worthy winner."

A third chimed in: "Wonderful. It symbolises the #QueensPlatinumJubilee perfectly.

"Very distinctive and tells you all you need to know."
