KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) backs Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to table a motion of confidence in Parliament to determine if he has majority support among MPs, says Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Chief Minister and GPS chairman said this was a wise move by the Prime Minister.
“According to our Constitution, the issue of who has majority support has to be decided in the Dewan Rakyat.
“In this matter, we support the Prime Minister’s stand to bring a motion in Parliament to test whether he has majority support or not,” he told reporters after launching the Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang 7.0 financial assistance package here yesterday.
Abang Johari said Muhyiddin should carry on as Prime Minister if he has the confidence of the majority.
“This is also a brave stand because if he has no support, he has to face the consequences,” he said.
He also said the Federal Government should focus on administering the nation rather than bickering over positions as its term is less than two years.
“Why not wait for the general election? Why (do you) have to fight like this?
“This is our stand in Sarawak. We feel that we need a government that is not in a flux, or the people will be anxious,” he said, adding that GPS was consistent in its stand that Malaysia needs a stable government to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and usher in economic recovery.
The Dewan Rakyat will sit for 15 days beginning Sept 6.
